Top 10 Songs

Top 10 Songs

As we approach the end of the year, everyone else is doing their “Top 10 of ’08” and if there is something that I pride myself on, it’s doing what everyone else is doing.  So, I’ll begin with music, since it’s close to my heart and then I’ll take a look at some books, not all of which will have been written in 08 but i promise that I did read them all this year… you’re just going to have to take my word on that.
Here they are my musical favorites of 2008, in no particular order, besides the order in which I came across them on my playlists…
All Alright  Sigur Ros, from “Med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust”
This album had me off balance for the first few listens; a departure from what I’ve come to expect from Sigur Ros.  But like many of my other favorite artists, reinvention has thus far meant new dimensions of beauty and artistry.

Coming September 8 : Yo La Tengo’s ‘Popular Songs’

We have an old saying at Matador HQ, “the only thing predictable about Yo La Tengo albums is their high level of excellence and crazy amount of musical ground covered”.  Trouble is, even if you believe we really have an old saying that unwieldly, it doesn’t really do justice in this instance. The new Yo La Tengo CD/2XLP/digital  album ‘Popular Songs” (OLE 856-1,2) could be the bravest musical statement to date in a career full of ‘em.   Recorded in Hoboken and Nashville in early 2009 with longtime associate Roger Mountenot, ‘Popular Songs’ finds the trio of Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James McNew at the height of their creative powers, fashioning an epic work that’s cooly confident as it is wildly adventurous.

Punk Goes Pop 2

Top Hits (featuring The finest in Top Hit entertainment)

Top Hits (featuring The finest in Top Hit entertainment)Have you ever been to one of those parties where everyone sits expectantly and watches two people dance around like retards in a retard shop? Right. No one has, because those parties don't happen. Maybe it was a simpler time when songs like “Poor Little Fool” and “Splish Splash” had some kind of mind controlling power over teenagers. It caused them to pull their pants up too high and wear the worst socks ever made. No wonder there was such condemnation of Rock and Roll in the fifties. Look at what it did to their stupid kids. Granted, this one isn’t terribly offensive, but they get worse.
